Bret Bartlett, owner and manager of Ex Umbra Defense Solutions, served with the Tampa Police Department (FL) for almost 32 years. He served as a Patrol Officer through the rank of Captain.  Bret's commands as a Captain include the Criminal Intelligence, Major Crimes, and Internal Affairs Bureaus. 

He also served as the lead firearms instructor for the department, responsible for developing and delivering top-quality firearms instruction.  He continues to teach firearms subjects to basic police recruit academies for the Hillsborough Community College.  Bret holds certifications as a Police Firearms Instructor by the State of Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission and is a licensed State of Florida Firearms Instructor (K License). He is also certified by the National Rifle Association in numerous firearms  subjects.​  Bret is a Certified Firearms Specialist as recognized by the International Firearms Specialist Academy (www.gunlearn.com), and by Glock Inc. as a Glock Armorer.

Bret is licensed in Florida as a Private Investigator, and is certified as Professional Certified Investigator by ASIS International (www.asisonline.org)  , as a Florida Certified Professional Investigator by the Florida Association of Private Investigators (www.fali.org), and as a Certified Forensic Interviewer by the Criminal Defense Investigative Training Council (www.cditctraining.com/aboutus.html) . Private Investigations is one of Ex Umbra Defense's primary functions.  Our PI network includes some of the finest PI's in the country.
